Exploring the Profound Teachings of Srimad Bhagavatam:

A Journey towards Spiritual Enlightenment

Introduction

The orientation session held as part of Evolve Pune’s Overview lectures of Srimad Bhagavatam, known as Bhagavat life, was a captivating experience directed by two esteemed speakers, HG Radheshyam Prabhu and HG Madan Sundar Prabhu. The session commenced with HG Radheshyam Prabhu delivering a thought-provoking speech, focusing on three essential subjects within Srimad Bhagavatam. He began by delving into the nature of the material world and the profound relevance of this sacred scripture.

The Profound Wisdom of Srimad Bhagavatam:

HG Radheshyam Prabhu passionately conveyed that Srimad Bhagavatam is an incredible literature that offers profound clarity on the realities of life. Drawing a compelling comparison between the material and spiritual worlds, he shared an insightful anecdote. HG Radheshyam Prabhu recounted questioning a devotee who had multiple ear piercings, which the devotee explained were a form of acupuncture to alleviate physical pain caused by COVID-19. This event beautifully exemplified a verse from Srimad Bhagavatam (7.9.17) spoken by Prahlad Maharaj as follows:

Oh My dear Krishna why don’t you call me at your lotus feet so I can serve at your lotus feet , when that time will come or how long would I be wondering in this world where we try to mitigate one pain , we try to get happiness but we get another pain.

Understanding the Material World:

HG Radheshyam Prabhu utilized engaging examples to illuminate the nature of the material world. He reflected on the transformation from horse-drawn carts, where the organic stool served a natural purpose, to the modern-day pollution caused by motor cars. He also explored the dynamics of relationships, drawing parallels between newlywed couples and employees and employers. Quoting Prabhupada, he vividly portrayed the material world as a place of competition and envy, contrasting it with the spiritual realm where cooperation and harmony prevail. To transcend the fluctuating conditions of the material world, HG Radheshyam Prabhu emphasized the need to elevate ourselves to the spiritual level.

Attaining Our Natural Position:

HG Radheshyam Prabhu delved into the significance of aligning with our natural position and the consequences of pursuing an enjoyer’s attitude (Bhoga Vrtti) versus cultivating a service attitude (Seva Vrtti). Using relatable examples, such as a peon desiring to be the CEO, he highlighted the satisfaction that comes from embracing our inherent nature rather than striving for artificial positions of dominance. He also drew inspiration from Prahlad Maharaj’s teachings, emphasizing the importance of understanding the reality of the soul and the transient nature of the material world. Srimad Bhagavatam elegantly imparts these foundational life principles.

The Art of Reading Srimad Bhagavatam:

HG Radheshyam Prabhu elaborated on how to approach the reading of Srimad Bhagavatam, referencing the verse SB 2.8.4: “Persons who hear Srimad-Bhagavatam regularly and are always taking the matter very seriously will have the Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna manifested in their hearts within a short time.”

He emphasized that reading the scripture should stem from one’s own initiative, driven by deep faith, attentiveness, and enthusiasm.

“One should learn how to associate with the devotees of the Lord by gathering with them to chant the glories of the Lord. This process is most purifying. As devotees thus develop their loving friendship, they feel mutual happiness and satisfaction. And by thus encouraging one another they are able to give up material sense gratification, which is the cause of all suffering.”

Benefits of Reading Srimad Bhagavatam:

HG Radheshyam Prabhu concluded by enumerating the multitude of benefits derived from reading Srimad Bhagavatam. By immersing ourselves in the scripture, our apathy disappears, replaced by an eagerness to dive deeper into its wisdom. Desires, anger, greed, and attachments gradually dissipate, allowing us to experience true bliss. Our anxieties, lamentations, and fears are dispelled, and our minds undergo purification. Devotional service to Lord Hari blossoms, making all our activities auspicious, and reviving our love for Lord Govinda. Ultimately, reading Srimad Bhagavatam liberates us from the cycle of birth and death, leading to a state of lasting peace. It cultivates compassion for all beings, fosters devotion towards fellow devotees, and provides solutions to all our problems.

Conclusion:

The orientation session on Srimad Bhagavatam, led by HG Radheshyam Prabhu, and HG Madan Sundar Prabhu, offered an enlightening exploration of this sacred scripture. The write-up provides a glimpse into the profound teachings discussed during the session, highlighting the significance of Srimad Bhagavatam in understanding the material world, attaining our natural position, and finding spiritual fulfilment. By following the guidance shared in the session, one embarks on a transformative journey towards spiritual enlightenment.

  1. Dear Poonam Pasare mataji,
    Please accept my humble obeisance’s!
    Jai Srila Prabhupada!!!
All glories to Sri Guru & Gauranga!
I’m so delighted to see your blog. Just by reading your words I’m realizing that how just by reading and associating with Srimad Bhagavatam our life can be changed totally. All sins and conditioning get washed away simply by reading the Srimad Bhagavatam. Wherever there is Srimad Bhagavatam recitation or narration going on, there is prosperity and well being.
There are various predictions made for Kali Yuga in twelfth canto of Srimad Bhagavatam.
In Srimad Bhagavatam 12.2.1-12.2.11, there are very difficult times stated for Kali Yuga. Some of them being that men and women would be together just for the sake of physical attraction, the businesses would be all about lies, there would be touch climatic conditions and hypocrisy and quarrel all around.
However, in verse 12.3.51 it is also mentioned that Kali Yuga is simplest to achieve liberation or develop the love for Godhead by easily chanting Hare Krisha Mahamantra. The same is repeated in 3rd Canto, 15th chapter, 25th verse where it is said that in this age of hypocrisy and quarrel, the best way to attain highest spiritual realisation is chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna | Krishna Krishna Hare Hare | Hare Rama Hare Rama | Rama Rama Hare Hare.
Please keep continue reading all the books of Srila Prabhupada and all the scriptures referenced by Srila Prabhupada if possible. I’m still learning and a long way to go.
I pray to Shree Nitai Sachinandana to bless you and give you permanent place at his lotus feet.

    Haribol.
