Is there any difference between spirit and soul?

The Sanskrit word commonly used is ātmā and in English we generally refer to it as soul or spirit soul.
In layman terms, spirit is compared against matter while soul is compared against body.
We need not worry so much about the English vocabulary on spirit and soul.
It would be enough to understand the we are not the body but the soul.
